Ultrafast Femtosecond Lasers: Fundamentals and Applications

Physical fundamentals of ultrashort femtosecond lasers are addressed along with emerging applications for precision manufacturing and metrology. Femtosecond lasers emit short pulses whose temporal width is in the range of less than a picosecond to a few femtoseconds, thereby enabling extremely high peak-power machining with less thermal damages. Besides, the broad spectral bandwidth of femtosecond lasers constructed in the form of frequency comb permits absolute distance measurements leading to ultraprecision positioning control and dimensional metrology.

Analysis of Polymer Carbonization using Lasers and its Applications for LCD Manufacturing Process

Laser carbonization of a polymer layer can be employed in various applications in the microelectronics industry, e.g., repairing brightness pixels of an LCD panel. In this work, the process of thermal degradation of LCD color filter polymer by various laser sources with pulsewidths from CW to fs is studied. LCD pixels are irradiated by the lasers and the threshold irradiance of LCD color filter polymer carbonization is experimentally measured. In the numerical analysis, the transient temperature distribution is calculated and the number density of carbonization in the polymer layer is also estimated. It is shown that all the lasers can carbonize the polymer layers if the output power is adjusted to meet the thermal conditions for polymerization and that pulsed lasers can result in more uniform distribution of temperature and carbonization than the CW laser.

Laser Processing Technology in Semiconductor and Display Industry

Laser material processing technology is adopted in several industry as alternative process which could overcome weakness and problems of present adopted process, especially semiconductor and display industry. In semiconductor industry, laser photo lithography is doing at front-end level, and cutting, drilling, and marking technology for both wafer and EMC mold package is adopted. Laser cleaning and de-flashing are new rising technology. There are 3 kinds of main display industry which use laser technology ? TFT LCD, AMOLED, Touch screen. Laser glass cutting, laser marking, laser direct patterning, laser annealing, laser repairing, laser frit sealing are major application in display industry.

Study on the Air-bearing Stage Driven by Linear Induction Motors

Linear induction motor is adopted as an actuator of the planar stage. An inherently poor characteristic at zero or ultra-low speed zone of the induction motor is remarkably improved due to a recent development of power electronic semiconductor technology and a spatial vector control theory. At present, a servo response speed of the induction motor reaches 90 percent of one of PM synchronous or BLDC motor. Specially, as a secondary of the induction motor can be constructed using uniform conducting sheets, there is no periodic force ripple as in PM motors. So, the induction motor can be superior to another driving means under a certain condition. This paper discusses the overall development procedure of non-contact planar stage with a big workspace using linear induction motors.

Experimental Study on Crack Detection of Clamped-clamped Beams

In this paper, the purpose is to study a method for detection of crack in clamped-clamped beams using the vibration characteristics. The natural frequency of beam is obtained by FEM and experiment. The governing differential equations of a Timoshenko beam are derived via Hamilton's principle. The two coupled governing differential equations are reduced to one fourth order ordinary differential equation in terms of the flexural displacement. The crack is assumed to be in the first mode of fracture and to be always opened during the vibrations. The differences between the actual and predicted crack positions and sizes are less than 9.8% and 28%,respectively.

Shell Wall Thinning and Mitigation Plan and Design Modification of a Feedwater Heater Impingement Baffle

Feedwater heaters of many nuclear power plants have recently experienced severe wall thinning damage, which will increase as operating time progresses. Several nuclear power plants in Korea have experienced wall thinning damage in the area around the impingement baffle inside feedwater heater installed downstream of the turbine extraction stream line. At that point, the extract steam from the turbine is two phase fluid at high temperature, high pressure, and high speed. Since it flows to reverse direction after impinging the impingement baffle, the shell wall of feedwater heaters may be affected by flow-accelerated corrosion. In this paper, to compare degree of shell wall thinning mitigation rate to squared type with mitigation rate of other type baffle plate, three different types of impingement baffle plate-squared, curved and mitigating typeapplied inside the shell. With these comparison data, this paper describes operation of experiments and numerical analysis which is composed similar condition with real feed water heater. And flow visualization is operated for verification of experiments and numerical analysis. In conclusion, this study shows that mitigating type baffle plate is more effective than other baffle plate about prevention of pressure concentration and pressure value decrease.

Structural Damage Diagnosis Method by Using the Time-Reversal Property of Guided Waves

This paper proposes a new TR-based baseline-free SHM technique in which the time-reversal (TR) property of the guided Lamb waves is utilized. The new TR-based SHM technique has two distinct features when compared with the other TR-based SHM techniques: (1) The backward TR process commonly conducted by the measurement is replaced by the computation-based process; (2) In place of the comparison method, the TOF information of the damage signal extracted from the reconstructed signal is used for the damage diagnosis in conjunction with the imaging method which enables us to represent the damage as an image. The proposed TRbased SHM technique is then validated through the damage diagnosis experiment for an aluminum plate with a damage at different locations.

Evaluation of Immediate Effects of an Electrical Massager on Stress Relaxation Using the Heart Rate Variability(HRV)

The purpose of this study was to investigate the short-term effects of electrical massager on stress-related parameters including heart rate variability (HRV), heart rate (HR) using the photoplethysmogram (PPG) signal with motion artifact correction. Twenty healthy subjects were randomly allocated to receive a 15-min section of three types ((1) resting mode (control group), (2) light massage mode, (3) strong massage mode). Results indicated that self-report, VAS (Visual Analog Scale) significantly decreased for two massage modes after massage except control group. In strong massage mode, it was associated with significant increases in HF, but significant decreases in LF and LH/HF ratio compared with the light massage mode. For all outcomes, similar changes were not observed in the control group. Also, the result founded that mean HR of all groups decrease. We conclude that electrical massager reduces perceived stress and improves adaptive autonomic response to stress in healthy adults.

Evaluation of Plantarflexion Torque of the Ankle-Foot Orthosis Using the Artificial Pneumatic Muscle

Ankle-foot orthosis with an artificial pneumatic muscle which is intended for the assistance of plantarfelxion torque was developed. In this study, power pattern of the device in the various pneumatics and the effectiveness of the system were investigated. The pneumatic power was provided by ankle-foot orthosis controlled by user’s physiological signal, that is, muscular stiffness in soleus muscle. This pneumatic power can assist plantarflexion torque of ankle joint. The subjects performed maximal voluntary isokinetic plantarflexion motion on a biodexdynamometer in different pneumatics, and they completed three conditions: 1) without wearing the orthosis, 2) wearing the orthosis with artificial muscles turned off, 3) wearing the orthosis activated under muscular stiffness control. Through these experiments, we confirmed the effectiveness of the orthosis and muscular stiffness control using the analyzing isokinetic plantarflexion torque. The experimental results showed that isokinetic torques of plantarflexion motion of the ankle joints gradually increased in incremental pneumatic. The effectiveness of the orthosis was -7.26% and the effectiveness of the muscular stiffness control was 17.83% in normalized isokinetic plantarflexion torque. Subjects generated the less isokinetic torques of the ankle joints in wearing the orthosis with artificial muscles turned off, but isokinetic torques were appropriately reinforced in condition of wearing the orthosis activated under muscular stiffness control(17.83%) compared to wearing the orthosis(-7.26%). Therefore, we respect that developed powered orthosis is applied in the elderly that has weak muscular power as the rehabilitation equipment.

Rubber-liked Biomaterial Experimental Setup based on Nonlinear Elasticity Theory

In order to understand the biomaterial like the blood vessel of artery, there is a need to quantify the biomechanical behavior of the vessel. Using computer-controlled experimental system, the experiment can acquire data such as inner pressure, axial load, diameter and axial gauge length without contacting the specimen. Rubber-liked material which is similar to passive artery was selected as pseudo-biomaterial. Deformations are measured for pressure-diameter curves. The data were collected and stored online to be used in the feedback control of experimental protocols. Finally, the illustrative data obtained from the experimental system were presented and the system shows that strain invariants are controlled to understand the nonlinear elastic behavior of biomaterial which is involved with strain energy function.

A Study on Fabrication of Internally Colored Shape in Stereolithography Parts using Molten Ink Deposition Process

Rapid Prototypes with internally colored objects are convenient by visualizing. A rapid prototyping method has been developed to fabricate mono-colored or multi-colored objects. In this work, a new process was proposed that can fabricate internally visible colored 3D objects in stereolithography parts. The process consists of projection stereolithography process using transparent photocurable resin for outer shapes and molten ink deposition process using molten solid ink for internal shapes. In molten ink deposition process, molten solid ink could be deposited uniformly in a designed pattern. To make molten solid ink uniform over a designed region, parametric study through a patterning solid ink was performed. By laminating resin and solid ink in sequence, the process can make colored 3D objects in StereoLithography(SL) parts. The practicality and effectiveness of the proposed process were verified through fabrication of colored basic 3D objects in SL parts.
