ABSTRACT
Hydrogen gas sensors are essential for industrial safety, environmental monitoring, and the energy sector. As hydrogen infrastructure expands and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles become more widespread, precise detection of hydrogen, which has a wide explosive range, has become increasingly critical. To ensure accurate detection of hydrogen in real-world conditions, sensor technologies must offer high sensitivity, stability, and reproducibility, along with cost-effectiveness, fast response time, and compact design. This study introduces a hydrogen gas sensor based on pressure analysis principles. This sensor was developed to quantitatively evaluate hydrogen uptake, diffusion behavior, solubility, and release characteristics in polymers under high-pressure conditions. Experimental results demonstrated the sensor’s excellent performance, with a stability of 0.2%, a resolution of 0.12 wt·ppm, and a measurement range of 0.12 to 1500 wt·ppm, all within 1 second. Furthermore, the sensor's sensitivity, resolution, and detection range could be tuned to suit different operational environments. Uncertainty analysis showed an expanded uncertainty of 8.8%, confirming the system’s capability for real-time hydrogen detection and characterization. This sensor technology is well-suited for applications in hydrogen refueling stations and fuel cell systems, contributing to the advancement of a safe hydrogen society.

1. 서론
수소는 낮은 밀도와 높은 확산성을 가지며, 공기 중에서 4에서 75%의 농도로 존재할 경우 폭발 위험이 발생할 수 있다[

2]. 따라서, 실시간으로 수소 농도를 정밀하게 탐지할 수 있는 감지 기술의 개발이 필수적이다. 특히, 수소 충전소, 이송 배관, 연료전지 시스템, 전해 분해 공정, 화학 산업 등 수소의 생산·저장·활용 과정 전반에서 수소의 농도를 정확하게 모니터링하고, 위험 수준에 도달하면 즉각적인 경보 시스템을 작동시켜 사고를 미연에 방지해야 한다[

15]. 이러한 요구를 충족하기 위해 정확하고 신뢰성 높은 수소 감지 센서는 안전한 수소 운영뿐만 아니라 효율적인 에너지 시스템 구축에도 핵심적인 역할을 수행한다.
또한, 수소 경제의 확대와 함께 핵심 인프라인 수소충전소 및 수소 연료전지차의 보급이 증가함에 따라, 수소 가스의 차단성과 누출 방지를 위한 고분자 오링 소재의 기체 투과 특성과 누설량을 정밀하게 평가하는 수소 감지 기술이 더욱 중요해지고 있다. 이에 더해, 이러한 소재의 기계적 강도, 물리적·화학적 안정성 및 구조적 신뢰성에 대한 요구도 증가하고 있으며, 이를 종합적으로 분석할 수 있는 연구가 필수적이다[

71] 등 다양한 원리를 기반으로 개발되어 있다. 각 기술은 장점을 가지지만, 동시에 한계점을 지니고 있어 적용 분야에 따라 적절한 센서 선택이 필요하다. 예를 들어, 전기화학식 센서는 높은 감도와 정확도를 제공하지만, 응답시간이 길고 상대적으로 높은 비용이 요구된다. 반면, 반도체식 센서는 경제적이며 내구성이 뛰어나지만, 온도 및 습도 변화에 영향을 받을 수 있다. 광학식 센서는 선택성이 우수하지만 비용이 높으며 특정 가스에 한정된 응답성을 보인다. 또한, 가스 크로마토그래피와 질량 분석법을 이용한 센서는 정밀한 분석이 가능하지만, 시스템이 크고 비용이 높으며 실시간 측정이 어려운 단점이 있다. 이러한 기존 기술의 한계를 극복하고 보다 신뢰성 높은 실시간 수소 감지가 가능하도록 새로운 센서 기술 개발의 필요성이 점점 커지고 있다.
본 연구에서는 수소의 농도 및 확산 특성을 정밀하게 측정할 수 있는 새로운 감지 시스템을 개발하였다. 해당 시스템은 압력 변화 기반의 측정 기법을 활용하며, 자체 개발한 확산 분석 소프트웨어와 연계하여 GPIB 인터페이스를 통해 컴퓨터와 연결된다. 이를 통해 온도 및 압력 변동에 의한 영향을 최소화하면서 실시간으로 수소 농도와 확산 거동을 정밀하게 측정하여 분석할 수 있다[

75]. 특히, 본 센서 시스템은 화학적 변형 없이 고분자 시료 내에서 수소의 거동을 직접 측정할 수 있어, 기존의 복잡한 분석 방식과 비교하여 더욱 간편하고 효율적인 수소 감지 방법을 제공한다.
개발된 수소 감지 시스템은 높은 감도, 우수한 안정성, 빠른 응답 특성을 갖추고 있으며, 고분자 재료 내 수소의 흡착 및 확산 거동을 정량적으로 평가할 수 있다. 본 기술은 수소 기반 인프라의 안전성 확보뿐만 아니라, 수소 가스 산업의 환경 모니터링 분야에서도 적용 가능하다. 또한, 고압 조건에서도 신뢰성 높은 측정이 가능하며, 고무 소재 및 O-ring의 기밀(차폐) 유지 성능을 정밀하게 분석할 수 있는 데이터를 제공한다. 이를 통해, 본 연구에서 개발한 센서는 수소 관련 설비의 신뢰성을 향상시키고, 장기적인 안정성과 누설 특성을 평가하는 데 중요한 역할을 할 것으로 기대된다.
2. 실험 방법 및 분석 원리
2.1 시료 준비 및 고압 수소 충전
개발된 수소 감지 센서는 고압 환경에서 수소가 충전된 고분자 재료가 탈착되는 과정에서 방출된 수소의 양과 확산 속도 등의 밀폐 성능을 정밀하게 분석하는 데 유용하다. 본 연구에서는 수소 방출 농도와 확산 계수 측정을 위해 고밀도 폴리에틸렌(High-density Polyethylene, HDPE), 에틸렌 프로필렌 디엔 고무(Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer, EPDM), 니트릴 부타디엔 고무(Nitrile Butadiene Rubber, NBR)의 세 가지 고분자를 실험 시료로 사용하였다. 본 연구에서 사용된 HDPE는 수소 연료전지 차량의 Type Ⅳ 수소 저장 용기의 라이너 소재로 광범위하게 활용되며, 수소 기체의 투과를 저감하고 탱크의 내구성을 향상시키는 역할을 한다. 또한, 가벼운 무게로 인해 연료 효율성을 높이는 데 기여할 수 있다. HDPE는 항균 처리가 적용된 특수 소재로 제조되었다.
한편, EPDM과 NBR은 고압 수소 저장 용기의 O-ring 밀폐 소재로 활용된다[

80]. 이러한 고분자는 뛰어난 내열성과 내구성을 갖추고 있어, 극한의 수소 환경에서도 안정적인 성능을 발휘한다. EPDM은 고온에서도 변형이 적고 구조적 안정성을 유지하는 특성을 가지며, 이는 고압 수소 시스템에서의 기밀 유지와 누설 방지에 필수적인 요소로 작용한다. 반면, NBR은 화학적 내성이 뛰어나며, 다양한 기체 및 유체와 접촉 시에도 물리적·기계적 물성변화가 적어 수소 관련 응용에서 신뢰성이 높은 밀봉 소재로 사용된다.
EPDM과 NBR은 60oC에서 48시간 동안 열처리하여 탈기(Outgassing) 공정을 수행하며, 이는 제조 과정에서 포함된 휘발성 유기 화합물(VOC)과 수분을 제거하여 순수한 수소 방출량을 정확하게 측정하기 위함이다. 실험에 사용된 시료는 두께 T = 2.0-2.5 mm 인 범위를 가지는 시트 형태로 제작되었다.
실온에서 설정된 압력 조건하에 고압 수소 가스를 주입하기 위해 스테인리스강(Stainless Steel, SUS 316) 소재로 제작된 고압 챔버를 사용하였다. 수소 가스 충전 과정은 수소 봄베의 최대 압력 12 MPa을 고려하여 1-10 MPa 범위에서 수행되었으며, 사용된 수소의 순도는 99.999%이다. 시료는 고압 환경에서 24시간 동안 수소 가스에 노출된다. 이는 이전 연구에서 보고된 고분자 재료 내 수소 확산계수를 고려할 때[

77], 시편 두께(2-2.5 mm)를 기준으로 시료 내부에 수소가 충분히 흡수되어 평형 상태에 도달하는 데 충분한 시간이다. 수소 충전이 완료된 후, 밸브를 개방하여 감압을 진행하였으며, 대기압에 도달하는 순간을 측정 시작 시점(0초)으로 설정하였다. 이 시점부터 시료 내에 흡수된 수소가 급격하게 방출되기 시작한다.
본 연구에 사용된 3종 고분자 시료의 화학적 조성과 기본적인 물성은 아래
Table 1과 같다.

2.2 압력 분석법에 의한 수소 방출량 측정
Fig. 1은 상온에서 시편으로부터 방출된 가스의 방출량과 확산도를 측정하기 위해 사용된 압력 분석장치를 보여준다. 이 장치는
Figs. 1(a)에서와 같이 수소 가스를 공급하기 위한 고압 봄베, 봄베로부터 수소를 공급받아서 시료에 일정 시간 동안 충전시키기 위한 스텐레스 스틸(Stainless Steel, SUS 316)로 제작한 충전용 챔버이고, 1(b)는 상용 USB 형 데이터 로거(ELP)와 충전 시료가 들어있는 직육면체형의 용기 (Container)로 구성되어 있다. ELP 센서는 압력과 온도를 측정하기 위해 사용되며, 대기압과 온도를 동시에 기록할 수 있는 상용 데이터 로거(EL-SIE-6+, Lascar Electronics, United Kingdom)이다.

스테인리스 스틸 챔버에서 수소를 충전 및 감압 후, 시편은
Fig. 1(b)의 직육면체형의 용기로 옮겨진 후 오링실을 한다. 이때 용기내의 시편에서 수소 가스가 방출되면서 용기 내부의 압력은 시간이 지남에 따라 증가한다. 즉, 용기 내부의 가스의 압력(

식(3)은 무한급수로서 수 많은 항들이 포함된다. 최적화 알고리즘을 기반으로 한

D를 정확하게 계산하는 전용 확산 분석 프로그램을 개발하였다[

Fig. 2(a)는 개발한 확산도 분석 프로그램을 이용하여 수소의 장입량(
C∞)과 확산도(
D)의 분석 예시를 보여준다. 먼저 시간에 따른 수소 방출량 데이터를 입력한 후, 그리고 왼쪽 아래에 시트형 모양 시료의 두께(Thickness)를 입력한다. 그 후에 바로 오른쪽 중간에 위치한 Curve Fitting을 실행하여 오른쪽 아래에 Unknown Parameter List에 보인 것과 같이
식(2)에서 구한 각 시간에서 방출 수소량을
식(3)에 대입하여 최소 자승법으로 각 매개변수를 최적화하여 계산하면 수소 확산계수와 수소 장입량 값을 얻을 수 있다. 즉,

3. 측정 결과 및 논의
3.1 측정 및 분석 절차
Fig. 3은 고분자 시료에 대해 고압 수소로 일정시간 동안 충전 후 감압 후에 압력 분석법을 이용하여 수소의 장입량과 확산 계수를 얻기 위한 절차이고, 다음과 같이 기술 할 수 있다.

(a) 감압한 고분자 시료를 직육면체형의 용기안에 넣으면 시료에서 방출된 수소로 인해 용기안의 가스 압력이 Fig. 3(a) 에서와 같이 증가하기 시작하고 시간이 지나면 일정한 값으로 수렴한다.
(b) 압력의 증가는 식(1)에 의해 방출된 수소 몰수로 변환된다(Fig. 3(b)).
(c) 식(2)에 의해 방출된 수소 가스 몰수는 방출된 수소 질량비로 변환되고 식(3)을 확산 분석 프로그램을 통해 수소장입량과 확산도를 Fig. 3(c)와 같이 얻을 수 있다.
3.2 수소 장입량 및 확산도 측정 결과
고압에서 수소 가스를 충전한 시편을 감압한 후, 용기내의 시료에서 방출된 수소 가스 농도와 확산도는 데이터 로거를 사용한 압력분석 방법으로 결정된다.
Fig. 4는 앞서 기술한 절차에 의해 측정한 시트형 HDPE, NBR S60및 EPDM H60의 세 종류의 고분자 시료에서 수소 가스에 대한 측정 및 분석 결과를 나타낸다.
Figs. 4(a)-4(c)의 왼쪽에는 감압 후 용기내에서 경과시간에 따른 수소 가스의 압력 (파란색 채워진 원)이고, 오른쪽에는 경과 시간에 따른 수소 가스 방출 질량 농도 (검은색 빈 사각형)에 해당된다.
식(3)을 이용한 확산 분석 프로그램을 통해 확산 파라미터

C∞가 계산된다.
Fig. 4의 오른쪽의 파란색 커브선은
식(3)과 프로그램을 사용하여 분석한 결과를 나타내며, 확산도(
D)와 총 가스 흡수량(
C∞)은 검은색 화살표로 표시된다.
Figs. 4(a)-4(b)에서 보인 바와 같이 HDPE와 NBR S60에서 시간에 따른 수소 가스의 단일 모드 가스 방출 거동이 가스 방출 측정을 통해 관찰되었다. 특히 HDPE에서의 단일 모드 가스 방출은 가스가 비정질상으로 확산되기 때문이다.

Fig. 5는 압력분석 방법으로 얻어진 세 종류의 고분자 시료에 대한 수소 장입량과 확산도를 압력의 함수로 나타낸 것이다. HDPE와 NBR S60에 해당하는
Figs. 5(a) 와 5(c) 에서는 노출된 압력에 대한 가스 장입량은 선형적으로 비례한다.
Figs. 5(a)와 5(c)에서 검은색 사선은 압력에 대한 수소 장입량 데이터에 선형으로 피팅된 것을 보여준다. 제곱상관계수(Squared Correlation Coefficient) R
2 값이 0.99로 우수한 선형성을 보여준다. 이는 HDPE와 NBR S60이 모든 가스 분자를 분해하거나 화학 반응을 겪지 않고 헨리의 법칙[
84]을 따르며 분자 상태로 흡수함을 나타낸다. 이 현상은 수소 분자가 높은 화학적 결합 에너지로 인해 분자 상태를 유지한 채 고분자 매트릭스에 물리적으로 흡수되기 때문으로 해석된다.

반면 EPDM H60에 해당하는
Fig. 5(e)에서는 카본 블랙 필러가 함유된 EPDM H60의 수소 장입량은 측정 압력 범위에서 Henry 법칙에서 벗어나는데, 이는 카본 블랙 필터 표면에 흡착된 수소에 기인한다. 카본 블랙 충전제가 포함된 EPDM 복합체에서 이중 흡착이 종종 관측된다. 시료가 압력이 증가함에 따라 나타나는 수소 장입량의 이중 모드 흡착 거동은 아래와 같이 표시된다[

Figs. 5(b), 5(d) 및 5(f)에서는 확산도가 노출된 압력에 따라 불확도 내에서 변화를 보이지 않는다. 따라서 확산도는 다섯 개의 측정 결과에 대한 평균값으로 나타내며, 검은색 수평선으로 표시하였다.
Fig. 5의 에러바는 계산된 확장 불확도를 나타낸다.

3.3 압력분석법 기반 수소 센서 시스템의 성능 평가
압력분석법 기반 수소 가스 센서 시스템의 성능을 평가했다. 성능 평가 결과는
Table 3에 나타내었으며, 성능(Performance) 평가 항목은 민감도(Sensitivity), 분해능(Resolution), 안정도(Stability), 측정 범위(Measuring Range), 응답 시간(Response Time) 및 성능 지수(Figure of Merit, FOM)가 포함된다. 압력 분석법 기반한 센서의 민감도는 용기내부의 데이터 로거의 압력변화에 해당하는 질량 농도 변화로 정의된다. 압력분석법 기반 센서에서의 민감도는 11.96 wt·ppm/hPa이었다. 일반적으로 민감도가 높은 센서는 더 나은 분해능을 가진다. 분해능은 최소 측정 가능한 압력인 0.01 hP에 해당하는 0.12 wt·ppm의 질량 농도로 결정되었다. 민감도와 분해능을 더욱 향상시키기 위해서는 용기의 내부 부피를 줄이거나 시료 수를 증가시킬 수 있다.

센서 시스템의 안정도는 시료에서 가스 방출이 종료된 후 36 시간 동안 측정된 표준 편차로 정량화되었다. 이 표준 편차는 질량 농도의 0.2% 미만으로 나타났다. 측정 범위는 실린더의 시료 질량에 따른 최대 허용 농도로 정의된다. 압력분석법 기반 수소 센서의 측정 범위는 1,500 wt·ppm 이하였으며, 이는 시료 질량과 용기 내부 부피를 증가하여 측정 범위를 더 증가시킬 수 있다. 시료에서 가스가 방출함에 따라 용기내부의 압력변화, 즉 부피는 1초 이내에 즉각적으로 변한다. 따라서 반응시간은 1 초 이내로 판단된다. 성능지수는 측정된 데이터와
식(3)을 사용해 계산된 이론값 간의 표준 편차로 정의된다. FOM 값이 낮을수록 센서의 측정 성능이 우수함을 의미한다. 압력분석법 기반 센서의 성능지수 값은 0.6% 미만으로 나타나, 이론값과 측정값 간의 좋은 일치를 보인다. 성능 테스트 결과를 바탕으로 압력분석법 기반 센서의 사양은 비교적 우수하여 수소 센서로서 현장에서 적용할 수 있다는 것을 보여준다.
Table 4는 수소 확산도 측정의 불확도 요인과 확장 불확도(Expanded Uncertainty)를 나타낸다. 이러한 방법에 의한 불확도 분석 사례는 많은 이전의 연구에서 종종 발견된다[
88-
90]. 확산도 측정에서의 불확도는 주로 반복 측정의 불확도, 수소 충전 전후 시료 부피의 변화, 측정 데이터와
식(3) 간의 표준 편차에 기인한다. 반복된 확산도 측정에서 발생한 유형 A형 불확도는 동일 시료의 수소 장입량에 대한 3회 반복 측정을 통해 결정되었다. 압력계의 분해능에 의한 불확도를 제외한 모든 유형 B형 불확도 기여는 직사각형 분포를 가지고 불확도를
3으로 나누어 얻어진다. 시료의 질량 측정에서 발생한 불확도는 사용된 전자 저울의 정확도와 교정성적서로부터 추정되었는데 불확도는 0.1% 로 아주 작다. 시료 충전 전후 시료의 시료부피 변화는 최대 2.5%에 달했다. 이는 직사각형 분포를 따르므로 B형 불확도는 1.4%이다. 시간에 대한 수소량 데이터를
식(3)을 이용한 피팅 결과들 간의 표준 편차는 샘플에 따라 0.5에서 3.5%까지 이였다. 최대 편차가 3.5%였음을 고려하여 유형 B 불확도는 직사각형 분포를 가지므로 2.0% 로 되었다.

데이터 로거 압력계는 GRADE A에 해당함으로 정확도는 1.0% 였으며, 직사각형 분포를 가지므로 B 형 불확도는 0.6%로 계산되었다. 압력계의 최소 판독 눈금은 0.01 hPa였고, 최댓값이 1,000 hPa 이므로 이는 0.001%의 상대 불확도에 해당한다. 분해능은 이 최솟값의 절반이므로, 삼각형 확률 분포를 따르기 때문에 6 으로 나누어 분해능에 의한 유형 B형 불확도는 0.0002%로 아주 작아서 무시된다. 실험실에서 측정 중 온도와 압력의 변동은 각각 ±0.2oC와 ±5 hPa였다. 그러나 온도와 대기압 변동에서 발생한 B형 불확도는 자동 프로그래밍을 통한 보정을 통해 0.1%로 최소화되었다.
합성 표준 불확도(Combined Standard Uncertainty)는 모든 불확도 요인들이 서로 상관관계가 없고 독립적이기 때문에 불확도 요인들의 제곱근의 제곱의 합으로 표현된다. 상대 확장 불확도는 정규 분포를 가정하고 합성 표준 불확도에 95% 신뢰 수준에 포함 인자(Coverage Factor) 2.3을 곱하여 얻어지는데, 확산도에 대한 최종 계산된 확장 불확도는 8.8% 이하이다.
4. 결론
수소 가스 센서는 수소 기반 인프라의 안전성을 확보하고 사고를 예방하는 데 필수적인 요소이다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 필요성에 대응하기 위해, 상용 USB 형 데이터 로거와 확산 분석 프로그램을 활용한 압력 측정 기반 수소 가스 센서 시스템을 개발하였다. 고분자 시료에서 방출된 수소 가스로 인해 용기 내부 압력이 증가하며, 이 압력 증가로 인해 방출된 수소 가스의 몰수를 얻는다. 이를 기반으로, 본 시스템은 수소 농도를 정확하게 측정하고 분석할 수 있도록 고안되었다. 또한, 전용 확산 해석 프로그램을 통해, 고압 환경에서 충전된 시료 내 수소의 장입량과 확산 특성을 정확하게 평가할 수 있다.
개발된 센서 시스템의 성능은 다양한 지표를 통해 검증되었다. 본 시스템은 0.12 wt·ppm의 낮은 검출 한계를 가지며, 최대 1,500 wt·ppm의 수소 농도를 측정할 수 있다. 또한, 0.2% 이내의 안정성과 1초 미만의 응답 속도를 보이며, 빠르고 신뢰성 높은 감지가 가능하다. 특히, 본 센서는 프로그램 보상을 통한 온도 및 압력 변동에 대한 영향을 최소화하도록 제작되어, 실험실 환경뿐만 아니라 현장에서도 안정적으로 작동할 수 있다.
압력 분석법을 활용한 본 수소 센싱 시스템은 실시간 수소 농도 모니터링뿐만 아니라, 고분자 재료 내에서의 수소 확산 거동 분석이 가능하다. 본 연구에서는 센싱 성능에 영향을 미치는 모든 불확도 요인을 고려하여 확장 불확도 분석을 수행하였으며, 이를 통해 측정 시스템의 신뢰성을 확보하였다. 본 연구에서 개발된 압력 분석 기반 수소 센싱 기술은 다음과 같은 주요 특징을 가진다:
- 효율적이고 저 비용이고 무전원에서 작동하는 간단한 센싱 기술
- 1초 이내의 신속한 반응 속도로 실시간 측정 가능
- 우수한 안정성 및 신뢰성을 가지며 온도·압력 변화에 영향 최소화 가능
- 다양한 크기와 형태의 시료에 적합하고 현장 환경에서 안정적 작동
- 고분자 재료 내 수소 흡수 및 확산 계수 정밀 평가
이 수소 센서 기술은 오링의 고무소재에서 수소 가스의 확산 특성을 효과적으로 측정하는 데 적합하며, 고압 조건에서 고무 재료와 O링의 투과 특성을 평가하는 데 적용할 수 있어 수소 충전소, 수소 연료 전지 자동차 및 수소 배관에서 활용이 가능하다고 판단된다.
